i've never danced before / i don't know how to dance! can i still come?
Nope. We're uncoordinated too, so we know from experience that your first class will be a whirlwind. But once you understand how we teach, you'll become better and better and improve all aspects of your coordination. We're like a rubix cube for your body.
Who attends your classes?
The people who enjoy our classes range from their mid 20's to their late 50's (our classes are for adults only) to people who have had previous dance experience, and there are other's who are totally uncoordinated - and proud of it! It's a fun, casual class at it's heart, so it doesn't matter what ability you are. What matters is your ability to let go of your inhibitions.
HOW DO I BOOK FOR A FRIEND?
You can book for a friend here. Booking on behalf of a friend is not possible via the Shut Up & Dance App or the MindBody App. However, you can book through this portal. It looks a little different to the timetable on our website, but we can assure you it's the same thing! Click here if you want to book a friend in for a class. You follow the booking process as though you're going to book for yourself, but you'll want to tick 'someone else' when reserving the single session. Please ensure your friend signs in to class when they arrive and registers with the instructor before the session begins (for health and safety reasons!)
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Wear whatever you feel comfortable exercising and sweating in! And don't forget your water bottle.
CAN I PAY CASUALLY? I WANT TO TRY BEFORE I BUY.
We totally get it. You're busy, you've got other Tinder matches, "it's me not you" etc. If you're a newbie, you can take advantage of the 2 x sessions for $25 (valid once, for Shut Up & Dance virgins, not shareable, valid 1 month) or you can pay as you go which is $20 cash You can also purchase an Energy Trip (10 classes) online or with cash on the door. No matter what - you've gotta book!
I can't come every single week. WILL THAT MATTER?
Not at all. Each class is different and the choreography un-related. If you miss a class, it's no big deal!
Can guys come?
Absolutely! We are for anyone and everyone who wants to dance. Our name is Shut Up & Dance. If you're interested in who tends to come the most, our classes are predominantly filled with people who identify as women. Because every class is a surprise, there is a chance the routine will be Burlesque. Or Beyoncé. Or Britney. But from experience, we find that no matter what gender you identify with, if you come prepared to let go of your inhibitions, you'll enjoy our classes. If you're wanting to give Shut Up & Dance a go but are a bit nervous (there's no need to be) we recommend coming with a friend.
CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT ROUTINES WE'LL BE LEARNING?
Nope! We like to keep things surprising. If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, it's likely that you'll come across hints every now and then. Keeping things on the down-low is all part of the fun...
WHAT STYLE OF DANCE DO YOU TEACH THEN?
Because we teach routines from films, music videos and musicals, each class and every course is different. We include a variety of music from the 80's 'till now and while we might teach Napolean Dynamite, Beyoncé, Grease and Michael Jackson, we would categorise the overall dance style as hip-hop and contemporary.
WHY CAN'T MY DAUGHTER/FRIEND/CAT WATCH THE CLASS?
Remember that time you were blaring "Backstreet's Back (Alright!)," lolling around on your bed with a hairbrush in hand when your dad opened the door to see what all the racket was about? We want to avoid that situation.
WILL YOU BE FRANCHISING OR OPENING IN A TOWN NEAR ME?
We are so excited to bring Shut Up & Dance to your community! At this stage, we have classes running in Wellington. We would love to expand to other main cities very soon. If you know of an area that is crying out for our classes, please get in touch and we'll see what we can do.
DO YOU DO PRIVATE CLASSES?
Our main focus is offering fun, relaxed dance classes, but we do take group bookings for birthdays, work functions and Hens/Stag Dos too (we smell a dance off!) We don't offer private lessons or wedding dances - our wonderful friends at First Dance Wellington would be our recommendation for that - we love their work!
YOUR WEBSITE ISN'T WORKING / I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO BOOK.
You must have a MindBody account to sign-up to our courses or class and you have to pay in advance. You can register here. If you still happen to encounter problems, contact us and we'll sort you out.
HOW DO I KNOW THAT I'M OFF THE WAITLIST and in the class?
If the class you're trying to book for is full, there will be an option to add yourself to the waitlist. You'll be able to view your waitlisted status via your 'Schedule' via your Account on the website or in the 'My Waitlists' tab on the app. Want to find out if you've been pushed from the waitlist into the class? You'll receive an email confirmation or get a push notification from your app. Please note: You'll need to have email confirmations/reminders and/or push notifications actually turned on. If you don't want emails or notifications, you'll need to check the app or website regularly to view your waitlist status.
HOW DO I REDEEM A GIFT CARD?
Ooh! You've purchased or received a gift card online. Epic! You can redeem it either through our fancy pants app (search 'SU&D' in the App Store or Google Play) or by following this link. You input the gift card ID (found on the PDF you've been emailed) in the gift card text box that appears at check out. This is NOT where it says promotional code, it's the next screen, where you enter your credit card information. Et voila! Redeemed.
Why do i have to specify my gender when i create an account ON THE APP?
We have successfully removed this requirement from the registration form on our website but unfortunately are unable to remove it from our branded app at this stage due to software limitations. We've since put in a feature request for the option to be able to remove this requirement altogether, as we don't currently see a need to gather this type of data. In the meantime, feel free to choose the 'ignore' option.
I'M REALLY UNCOORDINATED.
This isn't a question, rather a statement/concern that we hear on a daily basis from our customers, which goes to show that we all feel the same about our dancing abilities! We love that you think you're a bad dancer, and that's why dancing with you is so much fun.
We can't wait to dance with you!
